LOS ANGELES, CA — Berry Henderson died after a violent May 20 attack near Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue that his family says began when a dog aggressively chased and bit him at a bus stop.
KTLA reported that surveillance video showed Henderson, 37, running into the street around 3 p.m. as the dog pursued him and bit him. Henderson then pulled out a knife and stabbed the dog in an effort to defend himself.
According to the report, that is when a group of four men, including the dog’s owner, rushed Henderson. One suspect armed with a machete was seen stabbing and punching him.
Henderson, critically injured, managed to stumble across the street while trying to escape, but the men came after him again. His cousin, Demeya Brewer, said he was running away and even after he was down on the ground they continued to attack him.
Henderson suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the hospital.
His cousin Sharon Grimes said she was stunned that bystanders did not intervene or even call for help. Community activist Najee Ali said it was shocking that someone could be stabbed to death, beaten and bitten by a dog in broad daylight with no one helping.
Los Angeles police arrested three suspects, but a fourth man escaped. On Friday night, Henderson’s family gathered for a candlelight vigil and said he was a peaceful man, a local trade school student and someone loved by his friends and community. The family believes witnesses may know where the fourth suspect is hiding and urged anyone with information to call LAPD at 213-382-9470.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
