ATLANTA, Ga. — Officers patrolling Oakland City Station responded to reports around noon Saturday that a woman had been stabbed on a train, according to MARTA police.
When officers arrived, they immediately arrested the suspect and rendered aid to the victim. Emergency medical personnel treated the woman at the scene, but she died from her injuries.
MARTA temporarily suspended rail service at Oakland City because of the police activity and said shuttle buses would serve Lakewood, Oakland City and West End while the station disruption remained in place.
WSB-TV reported that MARTA police called the stabbing a “senseless act of violence,” said the victim’s loved ones and witnesses were in their thoughts, and said investigators were working to determine the circumstances. In a follow-up report, the station said the suspect was identified as 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews, who was booked into the Fulton County Jail as a murder suspect. Police said the motive remains unknown and described the stabbing as a random attack.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
