GLENDALE, AZ — A 23-year-old Arizona man accused of robbing an elderly woman and fatally running her over in front of her husband allegedly stopped at McDonald’s afterward and tried to use the victim’s credit cards to buy food for himself and two juveniles, according to court records.

Ali Hcaimi is charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with the June 20 killing of a 66-year-old woman in Glendale. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, investigators say Hcaimi targeted the woman and her husband as they arrived at a home they were planning to tour as a potential purchase.

Police allege Hcaimi pulled up in a maroon Lexus and told the couple he believed they had dropped a key while shopping at a Fry’s grocery store. According to the affidavit, the woman got out of the vehicle and approached Hcaimi’s car after he claimed to have found the key.

“The driver and sole occupant of the maroon Lexus [Hcaimi] told the victim that he had seen them at Fry’s and that they dropped a key,” the affidavit states. “The victim exited her vehicle from the front passenger seat and approached the front passenger seat of the maroon Lexus being driven by the suspect.”

Investigators said there was “a language barrier” because the woman and her husband spoke Cantonese. According to police, the woman lifted her purse to check her keys, and Hcaimi allegedly grabbed the bag.

“They struggled over retention of the purse,” the affidavit alleges.

Authorities say Hcaimi accelerated away while holding the purse and the woman remained attached to it. According to investigators, she was dragged beneath the vehicle’s rear wheels and suffered fatal injuries.

During a court appearance, a prosecutor described the injuries in graphic terms, saying Hcaimi ran over the “elderly female victim” in front of her husband.

“He ran over the elderly female victim in front of her husband, who had to witness this event,” the prosecutor said, according to Fox 10 Phoenix. “The form IV detailed he ran her over from head to toe. There were tire marks on her head.”

According to Law&Crime, investigators tracked Hcaimi to a nearby McDonald’s after the incident. Surveillance footage allegedly showed him using a self-order kiosk and attempting to pay with one of the victim’s credit or debit cards.

Police said the transaction was declined. Investigators allege Hcaimi then returned to his Lexus and entered the drive-thru. Statements from two juveniles who were with him indicated he later purchased food with cash.

Authorities detained Hcaimi after the purchase, according to the affidavit.

When questioned, Hcaimi allegedly denied responsibility and instead claimed he had been kidnapped earlier that day by an armed stranger. According to the affidavit, Hcaimi told investigators an unidentified man forced him into the trunk of his own vehicle after threatening him with a knife and gun.

“While driving to the gas station, the unknown male subject pulled out a knife and showed Ali a gun,” Hcaimi allegedly claimed. “Ali was then stripped naked and zip tied with his wrists and ankles bound before being placed in the trunk.”

According to the affidavit, Hcaimi told police he heard the alleged kidnapper commit the robbery and run over the victim while he remained confined in the trunk.

“The women said, ‘Stop, stop, stop,’ in English before Ali heard the vehicle run over the woman,” the affidavit states, recounting Hcaimi’s version of events.

Investigators said they found multiple items belonging to the victim inside Hcaimi’s vehicle, including her purse, credit cards, cellphone and a necklace. Police also challenged parts of his story after speaking with family members. According to the affidavit, Hcaimi claimed a cut on his hand came from the alleged kidnapper, but his mother told investigators he had injured the hand the previous day when a mirror broke.

The homicide case is not the only robbery investigators have linked to Hcaimi.

According to Fox 10 Phoenix, prosecutors say he is also facing charges connected to another robbery involving an elderly woman whom he allegedly followed home after watching her withdraw $5,000 from a bank. Prosecutors allege he stole her purse, which contained medication critical to her health, and later discarded both the purse and medication.

“The defendant is an extreme danger to the community,” a prosecutor said during Hcaimi’s court appearance, according to Fox 10. “He engaged in a string of robberies, two at least, where he preyed upon elderly victims.”

Hcaimi requested house arrest, citing alleged psychological issues, according to Fox 10. A judge denied the request, set bail at $1.25 million cash in the robbery and murder case, and ordered electronic monitoring.

He is scheduled to return to court on June 26.
