LAS VEGAS, NV — A Las Vegas man has accepted a plea deal in the deadly 2024 Summerlin shooting of his neighbor’s boyfriend after prosecutors said he shot the man during a heated confrontation outside a home.

Authorities and prior court reporting identified the defendant as Eddie Moreno, now 34. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon in the killing of 47-year-old Joe, or JR, Moreno. The two men were not related.

According to 8 News Now in Las Vegas and earlier reporting from KTNV, the shooting happened in May 2024 near Lake Mead Boulevard and Hills Center Drive in the Summerlin area. Police said Moreno shot JR Moreno after accusing him of exposing his genitals to children in the family.

Surveillance video later became a major focus of the case. Earlier reporting said footage presented during grand jury proceedings did not appear to show the victim exposing himself in the way initially described on a 911 call, and investigators said the victim appeared to remain on his own property during the confrontation.

Police also alleged Moreno told the victim, “I’m going to murder you,” before the shooting. Court reporting said Moreno had remained out of custody while the case was pending.

With the guilty plea now entered, the case is expected to move to sentencing on the reduced charge instead of going forward to trial on the original murder allegation.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
