ST. LOUIS, MO — A 7-month-old girl identified by police as Kiyomi Parker died after a shooting Friday afternoon in north St. Louis, where officers say a 10-year-old boy has now been charged with first-degree murder.

According to KSDK, Kiyomi was killed inside a home on North Broadway after a 10-year-old found a loaded gun hidden under a bedroom mattress. Other local reporting said the shooting happened just after 4 p.m. in the 8400 block of North Broadway in the Baden neighborhood, near Halls Ferry Road.

Police said officers arrived to find the baby with a gunshot wound and rushed her to a hospital, where she died. The 10-year-old was taken into custody the day of the shooting and the case is being handled in juvenile court.

A 19-year-old man, Ca’Marion Pawnell, was also arrested in connection with the shooting. Reports on the case say he is facing gun-related charges after investigators said the firearm used in the shooting had been hidden under a mattress and was accessible inside the home.

KSDK reported that Parker’s mother has chosen to respond publicly with grief, prayer and calls for love after the loss, while the case has also renewed questions about juvenile accountability and firearm storage in homes where children are present.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
