AIKEN, SC — The parents of missing 4-year-old Javeayah Harris have been arrested after investigators said evidence now shows the child is dead and may have been deceased for as long as a month before she was reported missing.
KHOU, citing the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, reported that 23-year-old Johmarea Harris and 22-year-old Michilae Herring were arrested Saturday. Authorities said Johmarea Harris was charged with homicide by child abuse, while Herring was charged with homicide by child abuse and filing a false police report. Other reports on the same case said both parents also face false-report allegations and that additional charges may still be filed.
Sheriff Marty Sawyer said during a July 4 press conference that investigators no longer believe Javeayah is alive. He said the evidence indicates the child may have been dead for about a month before her disappearance was reported.
Javeayah had been reported missing from the area of Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road in Aiken after her mother called 911 shortly after 8:45 p.m. on June 30. Early public appeals said the child had last been seen around 8:15 p.m. wearing Minnie Mouse pajamas, with pink beads in her braided hair, and possibly Crocs.
The case had triggered a major multi-agency search involving local and state officers, the FBI, drones, helicopters and ground teams across thousands of acres. But on Saturday, investigators said they were now searching an area of interest outside Aiken County for Javeayah’s remains.
Authorities said organized public search activity will become less visible, but the effort to find the child will continue. The sheriff’s office has not yet recovered her body.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
