TAMPA, FL — Tampa police are investigating a homicide that unfolded early Sunday after officers found a man with a gunshot wound in the 8400 block of North Armenia Avenue around 12:30 a.m.

Detectives said they believe the shooting actually happened in the 1800 block of West Waters Avenue and that the wounded man was then driven about half a mile away before officers found him.

According to WFLA, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.

The shooter, identified only as a man, told investigators that the victim walked up to his vehicle, opened the driver’s side door while holding a gun, and was shot after the driver pulled his own weapon and fired.

Police said they have not said whether the two men knew each other or whether there had been any confrontation before the shooting. Detectives were reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses as the investigation continued.

The Tampa Police Department said more information would be released as the case develops.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
