I cut my teeth in journalism when I began looking into what I saw as abuses of power in my local government. From then on, I was hooked on the dopamine rush of uncovering information.

NEW HAVEN, CT — More than three years after 25-year-old Ramon Yates was shot near Dixwell Avenue and West Hazel Street, New Haven police say they have arrested two suspects and charged them in his killing.

According to NBC Connecticut and WFSB, 20-year-old Talin Jackson and 19-year-old Devin Gardner, both of New Haven, were taken into custody July 11 and each charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. Bond for both suspects was set at $2 million.

Police said officers responded just after 6:30 p.m. on March 15, 2023, after multiple 911 calls reported a shooting in the area. Officers found Yates suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died two days later.

Investigators said Detective Michael Haines and the department’s Major Crimes Unit continued working the case over the years and eventually developed probable cause to make the arrests. The reporting released so far does not explain what new evidence or break in the investigation led police to charge the two suspects more than three years after Yates was killed.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
