MESA, AZ — Police say a homicide suspect opened fire on officers after a fatal shooting at an apartment complex near Broadway and Dobson roads in Mesa late Friday night.

According to Arizona’s Family, Mesa police received a call about a shooting just after 11 p.m. Friday near Broadway and Dobson roads.

The station reported officers were fired on as they moved in to take into custody a suspect accused of shooting and killing a man. Arizona’s Family said no officers were injured during the encounter.

Public reporting available Saturday morning does not yet answer several key questions, including the name of the person killed, whether the suspect was wounded by police, and what investigators believe led to the shooting at the apartment complex.

Those unanswered details are likely to shape whether the case remains a straight homicide filing, turns into a broader officer-involved shooting investigation, or both.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
