PLYMOUTH, MA — A full jury was seated Thursday in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after a four-day selection process, clearing the way for opening statements on Monday in the closely watched case involving the 2023 deaths of her three young children.
According to Boston 25 News, two jurors were excused at the start of the day, dropping the count to 15 before three more were added to bring the panel to 18. The jury is made up of 12 women and six men, and their identities haven’t been released.
Clancy, a Duxbury mother, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of her children. Prosecutors allege she strangled them with exercise bands inside the family’s home.
Her defense team is expected to argue that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated, leaving her not criminally responsible for her actions at the time of the killings. Legal observers have said one of the biggest challenges in the case has been finding jurors who can handle the emotional testimony expected during trial.
Final motions were also heard Thursday. Boston 25 reported that Clancy’s former husband, Patrick Clancy, asked the court to impound the 911 call, autopsy photos, and photos of the children taken before the killings from public release.
The court had sought 12 deliberating jurors and six alternates, and the trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks. Patrick Clancy is also expected to be among the first witnesses called once testimony begins.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
