MORGAN HILL, CA — One person was killed and seven others were injured after gunfire erupted Saturday night at a large party in unincorporated Morgan Hill, sending hundreds of people running from the area as deputies arrived.
According to the Los Angeles Times and a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies were called around 10:16 p.m. Saturday to Hale Avenue near Miramonte Avenue after reports of intoxicated people in the street and someone throwing bottles at cars.
When deputies got there, authorities said they found a chaotic scene with more than 300 partygoers trying to flee after several shots were fired. Multiple victims had been struck, deputies gave emergency aid until medics arrived, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene while the wounded were taken to local hospitals.
Investigators said the gathering was an unsanctioned party that had been promoted on social media. Homicide detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident, preliminary information indicates a handgun was used, and authorities said no suspects were immediately in custody.
Agencies including Morgan Hill police, Gilroy police, the California Highway Patrol and San Jose police responded to help secure the scene, control traffic and support the investigation. The sheriff’s office said the case is expected to be lengthy and complex, and investigators are asking anyone with information or video footage to contact the department’s Investigative Services Division.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
