GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI — A 47-year-old man killed his wife and their six children before fire crews found all eight dead inside a burning home Friday morning in western Michigan, authorities said.
WDIV, citing the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and News4JAX’s Associated Press report said forensic autopsies found that Kristopher “Kris” Karolkiewicz fatally shot Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children, then took his own life. Investigators said all eight died from gunshot wounds.
Deputies and firefighters were called to the family home on Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township, in Ottawa County along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, for a fire and discovered the bodies inside. Authorities had initially called the blaze suspicious.
Capt. Jake Sparks said preliminary findings indicate the fire was intentionally set in multiple places inside the home after the killings. Michigan State Police arson investigators are still working to determine the fire’s exact cause and point of origin.
Authorities identified the children as four boys ages 15, 12, 11 and 5, and two 11-year-old girls. Police said four of the children were biological and two were adopted.
The sheriff’s office said family pets also died in the fire. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office or Silent Observer.
WDIV reported that Mandy Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher and had been praised earlier this year by Grand Haven Area Public Schools for showing empathy, patience and care with students. Superintendent Kristin Perkowski called the deaths a devastating loss for the community and urged people not to spread unconfirmed information.
News4JAX’s Associated Press report said Kristopher Karolkiewicz most recently worked as a vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association until his employment ended earlier this month. The AP also reported that Amanda Karolkiewicz’s parents described her as a kind and devoted mother and asked for privacy as the family grieves.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
