LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas police officer who fatally shot a homeowner after he called 911 to report a home invasion has resigned from the department more than a year and a half after the killing.

According to 8 News Now and corroborating local reports from News 3 and FOX5 Las Vegas, Officer Alexander Bookman resigned effective March 27 after he had been found eligible to return to duty but chose to leave.

Brandon Durham, 43, called 911 early on Nov. 12, 2024, saying he was hiding with his 15-year-old daughter after someone broke into his home. As The Associated Press reported at the time, body-worn camera video showed Bookman kick in the front door, encounter Durham struggling over a knife with intruder Alejandra Boudreaux, yell for them to drop the knife and then fire six rounds.

News 3 reported Durham was killed less than 15 seconds after Bookman entered the home. Police said Boudreaux knew Durham, and AP reported she was arrested on home invasion and assault charges after the shooting.

Months after the shooting, a Clark County grand jury found there was not enough evidence to charge Bookman, according to News 3. Durham’s family has spent the time since pushing for accountability in the killing of the man who had called police for help.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
