TWIN FALLS, ID — Authorities say 24-year-old Chad Williams opened fire at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls on Saturday, killing three people and wounding seven others before he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators said Monday that Williams appears to have acted alone, but they still haven’t established a motive. According to Associated Press reporting and a local background report from Idaho News 6, the shooting unfolded in a busy shopping plaza where an off-duty Idaho state trooper and an armed civilian fired at Williams, actions police said helped drive him away from the restaurant and prevent further casualties.

Police said two of the seven wounded were treated and released, three remained in stable condition and two were still in critical condition. One In-N-Out employee was among the dead, and the restaurant had opened July 24 as part of the California chain’s Idaho expansion.

Witnesses described chaos inside and outside the restaurant as shots rang out. Lane Koehn said he saw a man with an AR-style rifle emerge near the drive-thru while another man with a pistol returned fire, and Nayeli Rodriguez said she was waiting for food with her daughters when an employee warned customers there was a shooting and told them to get down before they ran for safety.

New reporting on Williams’ background remains limited. The College of Southern Idaho said he attended from Aug. 22, 2022, through Dec. 14, 2023, served for a time as a student senator and was impeached from that role in February 2023 for what a former student government leader described as procedural reasons. The college said Williams did not graduate with a credential, and police said his family is cooperating as detectives continue trying to determine what led to the attack.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
