EUCLID, OH — Terrance Carnegie, the man accused in the 2017 killing of 19-year-old Travonta Smith, died in an apparent suicide while he was still a fugitive, bringing an abrupt end to the hunt for a defendant in a nearly decade-old homicide case.
According to The Plain Dealer, Carnegie had been on the run after a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted him in April on murder and aggravated robbery charges in Smith’s death.
Reporting on the case said Smith, a Painesville resident, was robbed and shot in the head on Jan. 27, 2017. His body was later dumped in the driveway of a North Collinwood home, and the case remained unresolved for years before prosecutors brought charges this spring.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said Carnegie was found dead Monday at a house on East 246th Street in Euclid. His death means the case against him won’t go to trial, leaving Smith’s killing without a courtroom resolution against the man prosecutors said was responsible.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
