LOS ANGELES, CA —Three Southern California gang members were sentenced to life in federal prison after prosecutors said they lured a fellow gang associate to a residential neighborhood in Orange and executed him in a killing ordered through the Mexican Mafia.

According to a Department of Justice announcement, Mike Escobar, 43, of Anaheim, James Mendez, 47, of Garden Grove, and Kevin Trejo, 38, of Anaheim were each sentenced on Thursday after their convictions for murder in aid of racketeering tied to the prison gang known as La Eme.

Federal officials said the three men were members of the Little Hood, Sureño, and Jeffrey Street gangs and took part in the August 2017 killing of a Costa Mesa gang member who was also associated with the Mexican Mafia. Prosecutors said the victim had been trafficking drugs and collecting taxes from other Orange County gangs for a Mexican Mafia leader who was in prison at the time.

At trial, prosecutors said Escobar, Mendez, and Trejo tricked the victim into riding with them before taking him to a neighborhood in Orange, where he was shot seven times in the back and once in the head. The three men were convicted after a 10-day trial in October 2023.

Federal authorities said the imprisoned Mexican Mafia leader accused of ordering the murder is scheduled to go to trial in August 2027. The FBI, several Orange County police agencies, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation investigated the case.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
