TWIN FALLS, ID — Three people killed in the Aug. 1 mass shooting at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls have been identified as Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, Christopher Claunch, 59, of Hagerman, Idaho, and Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City as investigators continue tracing a rampage that left seven other people wounded before the gunman died by suicide.
According to KSDK, KING 5 and KENS 5, police said Chad Williams, 24, opened fire multiple times at the drive-thru window, then kept shooting in and around the restaurant, along a nearby road and near a visitors center parking area. Police said 10 people were shot in all, counting the three people who were killed, and investigators still have not identified a motive.
Garibay was the In-N-Out employee killed in the first burst of gunfire, and the Twin Falls restaurant had opened only days earlier as part of the chain’s expansion into Idaho. Claunch was killed in the drive-thru area, while Schultz was fatally shot later in the attack as the violence spread beyond the restaurant and into the surrounding shopping area.
Authorities also used the new briefing and video release to highlight several people they say helped prevent even more bloodshed. Police said an off-duty state trooper exchanged gunfire with Williams from inside the restaurant and helped direct workers to safety, former police officer A.J. James was wounded trying to stop him, and Braxton Steube distracted the gunman on a walking trail as officers closed in. Police said Williams later killed himself near a canyon, ending an attack Chief Matthew Hicks described as violent, frightening and deeply traumatic for Twin Falls.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
