SEATTLE, WA — Seattle officials are demanding answers after the deadly Seattle Center shooting during the Bite of Seattle left three people dead, wounded several others, and raised fresh questions about whether another gunman is still on the loose.

According to KING 5, councilmembers pressed interim Seattle Police Chief Andre Sayles on Tuesday over the pace of the investigation and the city’s public communication failures, including whether police can say the public is safe and why it took hours for clear information to reach the public after the shooting.

The gunfire broke out July 26 in a crowded festival area at Seattle Center. Police have said the shooting grew out of a dispute between groups, and follow-up reporting from FOX 13 Seattle and KOMO News says three people were killed, several others were injured, including a 2-year-old boy, and investigators believe more than one shooter was involved.

A 15-year-old was arrested and later charged with first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. KUOW reported prosecutors said the case has not yet been referred as a murder filing while detectives continue sorting out who fired which shots. Court records cited by KUOW say preliminary testing indicates the teen’s gun did not fire the bullets that killed Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba or Ashley Whitehead, while 19-year-old Junior Cee Niko Semo was also identified in court records as being involved in the gunfight and dying in it.

Investigators recovered casings from four guns at the scene, and police have said at least one additional suspect remains outstanding. KOMO reported Seattle police had received about 130 tips by early August, while Sayles said investigators were still working to identify and arrest the remaining suspect or suspects.

Questions about the investigation have been matched by anger over the city’s handling of public information that night. Follow-up reporting from KOMO News and search results for additional KING 5 coverage show Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson ordered an independent after-action review after a roughly five-hour delay before the first public briefing, with the inspector general’s office now examining what caused the communication breakdown and how the city should respond during future emergencies.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
