DEARBORN, MI — A 43-year-old Dearborn man could face upgraded criminal charges after a 64-year-old family member injured in an assault inside a home on Theisen Street died Saturday, days after prosecutors first charged the suspect with attempted murder-related offenses.
According to MLive and additional reporting from ClickOnDetroit, Dearborn police were called to the 6500 block of Theisen Street at about 7:46 p.m. on Aug. 19 after an altercation between family members left the victim severely hurt.
Police said first responders treated the man at the scene before he was taken to a nearby hospital. The victim later died on Aug. 22, prompting investigators to return the case to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for possible additional or amended charges.
Mohammed Rustom, 43, of Dearborn, was initially charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. He was arraigned Aug. 20 in 19th District Court, where bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety.
Authorities said Rustom remains held in the Wayne County Jail pending any updated charges. Police have not publicly identified the victim, and the investigation remains active as prosecutors review how the death will affect the case.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
