SAN ANTONIO, TX — A 17-year-old boy died after being shot in the chest on San Antonio’s West Side early Wednesday, September 9, while officers were nearby investigating a vehicle burglary call.

San Antonio police said officers heard gunshots and a car alarm before finding the teenager wounded in the street, according to KSAT’s report. Investigators were still trying to identify the shooter and determine whether anyone else was involved.

Officers initially responded around 12:30 a.m. to the 5900 block of Monica Place, near Culebra and Callaghan roads. There, police said, they encountered a group of people in the street.

The group told officers the teenager had been burglarizing vehicles and that they had left him behind because they wanted no part of it, according to police. That account was an allegation relayed by the group.

While officers were at that location, they heard gunfire and a car alarm coming from the direction of the 1400 block of Melissa Sue. They went toward the sounds and found the boy lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound.

Police said he was wearing a ski mask and that a 30-round Glock magazine was next to him. The report did not say officers recovered a firearm from the teenager.

Several people ran from the shooting scene, according to police. Officers were unable to find or identify them. The reporting did not establish whether those who fled were the same people officers had spoken with on Monica Place.

The teenager was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. KSAT did not identify him.

KSAT also noted that San Antonio has no teen curfew because state law prohibits cities from imposing one. Authorities had not determined who fired the shots or what role, if any, others played in the shooting.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
