JACKSONVILLE, FL — A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder after a dispute during a pickup basketball game ended in the fatal shooting of Charles Johnson Jr., 33, at Clanzel T. Brown Park on September 16.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Jayden King, of Jacksonville, according to News4JAX. Investigators said King and Johnson began arguing while a group was playing basketball, and King drew a firearm and repeatedly shot Johnson before leaving on foot.
Officers responded shortly before 6 p.m. to a shooting report on Moncrief Road, north of Golfair Boulevard, near the Clanzel Brown Community Center. They found Johnson with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
Authorities took King into custody about four miles from the park. In a September 17 social media post included in the report, the Sheriff’s Office said the accused gunman was behind bars less than six hours after the shooting.
The fatal shooting followed another shooting at the same park in July, when a 12-year-old was shot in the leg during an argument between two groups, News4JAX reported. The report did not establish a connection between the incidents.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
