CYPRESS, TX — A 5-year-old girl was shot and killed while riding with her mother and four other children late Saturday in northwest Harris County. Two other children were injured by shattered glass.

The girl’s mother, Monica Hicks, identified her daughter as Zah’layah in an interview with KPRC 2. Harris County sheriff’s investigators said the shooting appeared to involve road rage, but stressed that their information was preliminary.

The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. September 19 in the 11800 block of Grant Road. Hicks was driving westbound from Jones Road when someone opened fire on the vehicle, according to authorities.

Zah’layah was struck and flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Hicks was not injured.

Hicks described her daughter as loving and recalled that, during their last conversation, Zah’layah told her she loved her and gave her a kiss.

“Who knew from that conversation, that that would be the last time I ever hear my daughter talk?” Hicks told KPRC 2.

Sgt. Adriel Hinojosa said investigators were still gathering details. The sheriff’s office said a description of the suspected vehicle was not immediately available.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects involved. Anyone with information can call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
