NORTH OLMSTED, OH — A 42-year-old mother and her 18-year-old son were killed in a shooting at their home September 19, bringing the death toll from two family shootings in North Olmsted in four days to three.

Hammodi Ahmed Ali Al Naser, 44, the woman’s husband and the teenager’s father, faces two counts of aggravated murder, News 5 Cleveland reported. Police took him to the North Olmsted City Jail.

Mother Found Inside, Son Outside

A neighbor called 911 at approximately 2:10 p.m. Saturday to report that a man had shot his wife and son. Officers and firefighters responded to the 3800 block of Evelyn Drive, according to 19 News’ account of a police release.

Officers found the teenager outside the front of the house with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders provided aid before he was taken to a hospital. His mother was found inside with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead. News 5 subsequently confirmed the son had also died.

Lt. Matt Beck told News 5 that police believed seven children lived in the home and that all seven had been moved to another residence and were safe. Investigators sought Arabic-language assistance to interview the suspect. Officers collected evidence, photographed the home and interviewed neighbors, with assistance from Westlake, Fairview Park and Bay Village police.

Police described the shooting as an isolated family incident and said the motive remained unknown. Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed sorrow for the families and community in a statement addressing domestic violence. As of News 5’s report, Naser’s arraignment was scheduled for Monday, September 21, in Rocky River Municipal Court.

Earlier Shooting Raises Self-Defense Claim

Three days earlier, on September 16, Abdulla Farraj, 22, was fatally shot at a home in the 5100 block of Lucydale Avenue. His brother, Ameen Farraj, 18, was charged with murder, according to Telemundo Cleveland.

Ameen and his sister told 911 dispatchers that Abdulla had been attacking their mother. His sister said Ameen was protecting her, their mother and a cousin. Abdulla died after being taken to a hospital.

Defense attorney Issa Elkhatib said Abdulla had knocked their mother unconscious, then charged at Ameen after Ameen heard screams, came downstairs and told him to leave. According to the attorney’s account, Ameen fired once, called 911 and tried to perform CPR while also helping his mother. Elkhatib alleged a history of family violence and serious mental-health problems, including schizophrenia, FOX 8 reported.

At Ameen’s September 17 arraignment, Elkhatib argued self-defense and defense of others, citing his client’s lack of a criminal record. Magistrate Joseph Grandinetti followed the prosecution’s recommendation and set bond at $1 million, with GPS monitoring required if Ameen obtained release. A preliminary hearing was waived, Telemundo reported.

Elkhatib said the defense would seek dismissal. Beck told FOX 8 that a specialized committee would review the self-defense claim and that the case was expected to go before a Cuyahoga County grand jury for possible indictment.
