SPRING, TX — A 15-year-old Westfield High School student died after a shooting near campus Tuesday, Sept. 22, prompting increased security across Spring ISD as the search for the shooter continued.
The district confirmed the student’s death and announced additional police presence, according to FOX 26 Houston. The shooting happened off school property on Ella Boulevard after dismissal; a few students remained inside.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. His name has not been released.
According to KBTX’s account of Gonzalez’s briefing, investigators believe an argument between the teen and another male escalated into gunfire on a sidewalk beside the school and district administration building. Calls reached Spring ISD, and someone flagged down a passing deputy. Both agencies responded.
Reports differ on timing: FOX 26 placed the shooting around 2:40 p.m.; KBTX reported about 4 p.m.
The suspect reportedly fled on foot. Investigators had not established his age, his connection to the victim or school, or whether others were involved. Only one victim was confirmed. Gonzalez said he had no verified suspect description and could not confirm dispatch chatter about a ski mask. Authorities had not clarified how many shots were fired or whether a weapon was recovered.
Gonzalez said authorities did not believe there was an active community threat. No motive had been released.
Spring ISD said counselors were available, asked families to respect the student’s family’s privacy, and urged parents to check on children and report safety concerns. Anonymous district tips can go to 281-891-8477.
Investigators are seeking information and video. Contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
