WILKINSBURG, PA — The man accused of killing a UPMC doctor and wounding his wife in their Edgewood home now faces rape, sexual assault and robbery charges in a separate Wilkinsburg case.
Allegheny County Police said detectives investigating the homicide recovered evidence connecting Elijah Hemingway, 32, to the reported sexual assault, according to WPXI. Wilkinsburg police brought the assault report to the detectives’ attention during the homicide investigation.
The woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man she did not know around 10:30 a.m. on September 23. She said she had been walking along a path connecting an alley to West Street.
Detectives said they collected multiple items linking Hemingway to that attack. They also recovered the woman’s cellphone, which had been reported stolen during the incident. The report did not identify the other items or specify where the phone was found.
Hemingway separately faces homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and other charges in the attack on Dr. Idris Evans and his wife. He is accused of stabbing the couple while they slept inside their Edgewood home.
Evans, who died in the attack, was a pediatric critical care physician at Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. His wife was critically injured; WPXI reported that she remained hospitalized but was now in stable condition.
The couple’s two children, ages 8 and 12, escaped the home safely.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
