DETROIT, MI — Three men were killed and four other people were wounded Sunday morning, Sept. 27, in a shooting at an after-hours venue on the city’s west side.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said a fight preceded the gunfire near Eaton Avenue and Prest Street, according to WDIV’s reporting. Officers found three bodies in a vacant field beside a home police described as an after-hours strip club. Initial reports had indicated four people were shot.
The department received a ShotSpotter alert around 7:20 a.m., before a 911 call, and officers arrived within four minutes, Scripps reported. People at the scene had attempted to help the victims before emergency responders arrived.
Bettison described the men killed as approximately 30 or older. Two men and two women in their 20s and 30s were taken privately to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening. Their names hadn’t been released.
The address had generated seven calls for police service since the beginning of the year and had already been investigated, Bettison said. He didn’t explain the earlier investigation or the circumstances and outcomes of those calls.
Mayor Mary Sheffield pledged continued enforcement against illegal after-hours operations in homes and businesses. She also promised support for affected families and neighbors through the city’s Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety.
The location falls within a Community Violence Intervention zone served by Detroit 300. Intervention leader Stephen Grady said groups would work with police and residents on prevention and healing. City Council President James Tate Jr. urged the public to let investigators carry out their work.
Michigan State Police also responded. Bettison said investigators had leads and didn’t believe there was an ongoing threat to the area, but he didn’t disclose details about those responsible. Anyone with information can contact Detroit police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
