NORTHRIDGE, CA — A man and woman were shot to death during a crowded Friday night party at an upstairs event venue near Cal State Northridge, with gunfire interrupting a live performance.

Los Angeles police responded around 11:05 p.m. Oct. 2 to University Plaza near Nordhoff Street and Reseda Boulevard, according to KTLA reporting carried by KFOR. LAPD Lt. Guy Golan said both victims died at the scene and were believed to be between 18 and 25 years old. The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday morning that police had made no arrests.

The shooting happened at Artist Lounge, a second-floor nightclub and event space in the shopping center just west of university parking lots. KTLA placed the response in the 18400 block of Nordhoff Street; the Times gave the broader 18000 block and described the gathering as a private party less than a mile from campus.

Video obtained by KTLA showed a performance underway when shots rang out amid the packed crowd. Other footage showed people leaving the venue. Early reports suggested an open-mic event, but KTLA said the precise type of gathering had not been confirmed.

A witness told KTLA that a gunman pulled a weapon from his waistband and fired at one person before turning toward another. The witness said the second shot missed that intended target and struck someone else in the back. That account was not presented as a police finding, and the reporting did not establish whether the person described as being struck in the back was one of the two people killed.

More than 100 attendees were escorted out individually as officers cleared the upstairs gathering, according to OnScene Media reporting cited by the Times. Some attendees were temporarily detained in the parking lot, including several restrained with zip ties, until investigators cleared them. OnScene reported that some appeared to be minors and were picked up by parents; their ages were not independently confirmed in the reports.

Police were also investigating a report of a possible third victim. Golan told KTLA that authorities were searching for that person, and the Times reported that police had not located a third victim as of Saturday morning. No other injuries were confirmed in the Times report.

Artist Lounge advertises space for rehearsals, productions, meetings and content creation, KTLA reported, with rental listings ranging from $110 to $265 an hour. The venue had not responded to the Times’ request for comment Saturday.

Homicide detectives were still examining the venue and surrounding area at 6 a.m. Saturday. The reports did not identify the victims or establish a motive, and police had provided no suspect description.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
