TAMPA, FL — A 74-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman in her 70s was fatally shot inside a pickup truck following an argument that began at a restaurant.

Alan Barber was arrested Oct. 3 in connection with the shooting shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to WFLA’s report citing the Tampa Police Department. Investigators said Barber and the woman had known each other for more than 20 years.

Police said Barber was driving a white Chevrolet pickup, with the woman in the passenger seat. A disagreement at a local restaurant continued and escalated inside the truck.

As the argument continued, Barber shot the woman, then stopped the truck in a business parking lot in the 4100 block of East Fowler Avenue, police said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to her upper body and died at the scene.

Officers secured the scene, and investigators recovered the firearm police identified as the weapon used in the shooting. The pickup was impounded as evidence.

Acting Police Chief Brett Owen condemned the use of a gun to settle an argument and said Barber would face justice. Barber was taken into custody that day and transported to the Orient Road Jail on the murder charge.

The report did not identify the woman or specify her relationship to Barber beyond their having known each other for more than two decades.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
