VIENNA, GA — Two men, ages 20 and 23, were killed and dozens of people were injured when gunfire erupted during a homecoming celebration that stretched from Saturday night into early Sunday, October 4, on Pine Street.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported 35 people injured Sunday morning, according to WSB-TV. The agency confirmed it was assisting the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office with the response in Vienna, about two hours south of Atlanta.
Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls confirmed the two deaths and the men’s ages to WALB and WMAZ, WSB reported. He described the scene as “horrific.” The report did not identify either man by name.
Sheriff Craig Peavy told WMAZ that about 1,000 people attended the celebration and that shots were fired at about 50 people during the festivities. That figure was not a confirmed count of people struck by gunfire.
Peavy also told WMAZ that as many as 25 people were taken to a hospital for treatment. That transport figure was separate from the GBI’s Sunday morning total of 35 injured. The reporting did not establish how many injuries were gunshot wounds or provide a breakdown of patients’ conditions.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded. Police initially told WALB that the number of injured was high but could not give a specific count.
As of WSB’s October 4 report, a possible motive remained unknown, and it was unclear whether any suspects were being sought or were in custody.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
