TIPP CITY, OH — Caleb Flynn, a former music pastor who briefly appeared on “American Idol,” was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife, Ashley, a 37-year-old schoolteacher and volleyball coach.

Flynn, 40, received the sentence after a jury convicted him Sept. 29 of murder, felonious assault and evidence tampering, according to an Associated Press report published by WFLA. Prosecutors said he shot Ashley in February at their Tipp City home, north of Dayton, then staged a home invasion and blamed a burglar.

At the Oct. 5 sentencing, Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt criticized Flynn for using his religious faith to conceal his dishonesty and sexual desires. A family member read victim statements from the couple’s daughters. Pratt repeated one daughter’s question about what Ashley could have done to make him hate her.

Flynn wept as he apologized to his family, beginning with his two daughters. He acknowledged breaking his wedding vows and lying about many things but continued to deny killing Ashley.

Prosecutors Described an Affair and a Staged Burglary

In closing arguments, prosecutors said Flynn killed his wife because he wanted to leave the marriage. The couple’s daughters were at the house with their father when police arrived.

Prosecutors said Flynn sent his lover a text the night before the shooting: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

Alleigha Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022, when she was a 20-year-old intern at his church, and that their affair lasted more than a year. She told jurors he had said he hated Ashley and had considered killing her.

Jurors also heard artificial intelligence-generated love songs that prosecutors said Flynn created for Botner.

Defense Challenged the Shooting Evidence

The gun used to kill Ashley was not found at the scene. Flynn’s attorney argued that investigators had uncovered no evidence showing he fired a gun that day.

Prosecutors pointed to Flynn’s fingerprints and DNA at the scene and said his electronic devices showed him moving through the house during the period when he claimed to have been asleep. Flynn did not testify, and the defense called no other witnesses.

During his 2013 appearance on “American Idol,” Flynn credited Ashley with encouraging him to pursue his ambition to sing on the show. He did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood. His sentence leaves him with no possibility of parole.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
