BOSTON, MA —Opening statements in Matthew Farwell’s federal trial Friday framed a central dispute for the newly seated jury: whether Sandra Birchmore was killed and her death staged as a suicide, or whether she took her own life.

According to Boston 25 News’ live courtroom reporting, prosecutors outlined surveillance footage, text messages, medical testimony and DNA evidence they say connects the former Stoughton police officer to the strap found around Birchmore’s neck. Defense attorneys countered with her mental-health history, online searches, messages and the initial medical examiner’s ruling.

Prosecutors alleged Farwell groomed and sexually abused Birchmore beginning when she was 15, then strangled her to prevent her from exposing him. Their opening described the death as a killing deliberately made to look like suicide.

The defense maintained that Birchmore died by suicide and highlighted what attorneys described as a lack of evidence of a struggle. Those competing accounts were presented in opening statements, laying out what each side expects the evidence to show.

A panel of 10 men and six women was selected and sworn in Friday morning at the Moakley Federal Courthouse. Both sides had completed their openings by late morning. Jurors were then excused for the long weekend, with court scheduled to resume Tuesday, October 13.

The panel was seated after jury selection began Tuesday. More than 400 prospective jurors were initially called, and fewer than 40 were questioned individually Thursday. That questioning covered attitudes toward law enforcement, connections to mental health and suicide, exposure to coverage of the case and the ability to view graphic images without losing impartiality.

Birchmore was found dead in her Canton apartment in February 2021. Prosecutors allege Farwell sexually exploited her for years after meeting her through the Stoughton Police Department’s Explorers Program. They say she told him he was the father of her unborn child and that a friend contacted Stoughton police about their relationship. Boston 25 reported that DNA testing showed Farwell was not the father.

The FBI arrested Farwell in August 2024. He is charged in the deaths of Birchmore and her unborn baby. The trial now moves beyond jury selection and the attorneys’ opening accounts toward the evidence jurors will use to decide whether prosecutors have proved premeditated murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
