HOLLYWOOD, FL — A father and son are facing multiple felony charges after allegedly holding two car salesmen at gunpoint and forcing them to drive across South Florida during a dispute over a $37,000 Mercedes-Benz, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Oscar Garcia-Berrios, 50, and Brandon Garcia, 23, were arrested on charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Police say the incident began when the two became suspicious about the status of a used car purchase they had made two days earlier.

According to the arrest affidavit, the suspects showed up unannounced at Car Express Florida in Pompano Beach on November 28 after Garcia received a text message from one of the victims that appeared to be sent by mistake. Garcia allegedly believed the message suggested the car dealership was scamming them.

Once at the dealership, one of the victims reported seeing Garcia standing beside the Mercedes-Benz with a backpack, accompanied by Garcia-Berrios and an unidentified third man. The group allegedly began making demands for the vehicle’s title and a temporary tag.

When the salesmen explained they couldn’t comply without additional paperwork, Garcia allegedly pulled an AR-15-style rifle from his backpack and pointed it at one of them, police said. Garcia-Berrios allegedly pulled a handgun, while the third man reportedly disarmed one of the victims who had a gun in his waistband.

The affidavit states the victims feared for their lives. While the dealership employees attempted to reach a manager to resolve the dispute, the third suspect allegedly began taking items from the office, including temporary tags, registration documents, and a money counter.

After about 40 minutes, police say Garcia-Berrios forced the salesmen into their vehicle at gunpoint. Garcia allegedly followed behind in the Mercedes-Benz, with the third suspect in another SUV. During the drive, one of the victims reportedly managed to discreetly text family members, asking them to alert authorities.

The group agreed to meet the manager at a RaceTrac gas station in Hollywood. According to deputies, family members had alerted police to the location, and law enforcement was waiting when the group arrived.

Garcia was reportedly holding a backpack containing the rifle and one of the suspect’s phones. A handgun was also allegedly recovered from Garcia-Berrios.

Both men were arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail without bond. Authorities said the third suspect has not yet been identified. The next court appearance for Garcia and Garcia-Berrios is scheduled for Friday.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
