BEVERLY HILLS, CA —An Uber driver accused of dragging a sheriff’s deputy during a Lennox traffic stop was arrested after authorities said he later held a female passenger hostage inside his pickup truck for roughly nine hours in Beverly Hills.

Authorities identified the suspect as Osvaldo Del Rio. He was taken into custody at about 2 a.m. Monday after members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau deployed chemical agents to force him from the vehicle.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the confrontation began at 2:55 a.m. Sunday when a sheriff’s deputy stopped a gray Ford pickup for vehicle code violations near 104th Street and Hawthorne Avenue in Lennox.

The Sheriff’s Department said the deputy saw a handgun in Del Rio’s waistband and tried to remove him from the truck. Del Rio allegedly drove away, dragging the deputy about 150 feet. The deputy was taken to a hospital and later released.

Beverly Hills police encountered the same vehicle later that day after an automated license plate recognition system generated an alert at about 1:30 p.m. Officers attempted another traffic stop, triggering a short pursuit that ended when Del Rio’s vehicle collided with a second car, police said.

Del Rio, who authorities believed was armed with a handgun, refused to get out of the pickup in the 8800 block of Burton Way. The Sheriff’s Department said he then held a female passenger hostage during the standoff. Her relationship to Del Rio has not been disclosed.

Sheriff’s personnel arrived at the scene around 3 p.m. and spent hours using de-escalation tactics in an effort to persuade Del Rio to surrender. At about midnight, the woman escaped from the vehicle and ran toward officers.

Del Rio exited the truck roughly two hours later after chemical agents were deployed, but officials said he still refused to comply with commands. He was ultimately taken into custody after deputies used less-than-lethal tactics and assistance from a Sheriff’s Department K9.

Authorities said Del Rio was taken to a hospital for medical clearance before he was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

The Sheriff’s Department later served a search warrant connected to the case and recovered a large cache of weapons, including rifles, handguns and ammunition.

Uber said Del Rio has been removed from its platform and that the company will assist law enforcement with the investigation.

“This must have been a terrifying experience,” Uber said in a statement. “We’re grateful to law enforcement for their response and relieved that no one was seriously injured.”
