MOBILE, AL — A Mount Vernon man is facing a manslaughter charge after police said he was driving at an extreme speed before a crash on Airport Boulevard killed Stacey Neese as she was heading to work.
WKRG, citing Mobile Police, reported that 32-year-old Clifton Land IV was driving a Dodge Charger 119 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone when he crashed into Neese’s vehicle on May 14 near Willow Brook Run East.
Investigators said Neese was attempting to enter westbound traffic on Airport Boulevard when the crash happened. She died in the wreck.
Police arrested Land on Thursday and charged him with manslaughter.
Neese’s brother, Jake May, said she was on her way to do office work early that morning and remembered her as someone who brought joy to people around her. He said she was always smiling and had a glow about her.
May also said there was no reason for anyone to be driving that fast on any road in Mobile and said something has to be done about reckless driving and speeding in the city.
As the family grieves, May said he hopes Neese’s death brings more awareness to reckless driving. He added that while he believes his sister would want forgiveness, Land still needs to face the consequences of his actions.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
