MOBILE, AL — A 47-year-old Mobile woman has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a February crash on Old Shell Road that killed 21-year-old Carlos Funez.

According to WKRG, Jennifer Farley was charged Friday after investigators tied her to the deadly wreck, and the station reported she has a long history of traffic and drug arrests.

Earlier Mobile police reporting cited by NBC 15 said officers were called to Old Shell Road and Cosgrove Drive around 3:15 a.m. on Feb. 23. Police said Funez was standing outside his vehicle with the hazard lights on in the westbound lane when another westbound vehicle struck him.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle remained on scene, and Funez was later identified as the person killed in the crash.

Public reporting reviewed Saturday does not spell out what new evidence pushed the case from a fatal crash investigation to a manslaughter charge, nor does it explain whether Farley’s prior arrests were directly tied to the allegations in this case.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
