BRYAN, Texas — Hannah Rapp, a 26-year-old professional boxer and Yorktown, Indiana, native, died after authorities say a driver passed her and another cyclist on a rural Texas road, stopped, then reversed into her during a Saturday morning crash in Brazos County.

According to a probable cause affidavit detailed by KBTX and background reporting from The Associated Press, deputies were called around 9:50 a.m. July 18 to the 23000 block of FM 159, where Rapp was found unresponsive in the roadway after being hit by a vehicle. She was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigators said Charles Eric Medina, 31, had been driving east when he passed Rapp and another cyclist at a high rate of speed. After one cyclist raised his arms and yelled, Medina allegedly slammed on his brakes, skidded to a stop, put the vehicle in reverse and rapidly accelerated backward, striking Rapp and knocking her into the roadway.

KBTX reported that investigators documented braking skid marks, separate reverse skid marks and heavy rear-end damage to the vehicle, including a crushed rear hatch and shattered rear window. Authorities said that physical evidence did not match Medina’s claim that he was backing up at a low speed and did not see Rapp until the last moment.

Medina was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Jail records cited by KBTX said his bond was set at $250,000 and that he had not been released as of Sunday, while investigators said the case remains under investigation and had not immediately offered a motive.

Rapp grew up in Yorktown, graduated from Purdue University in 2022 and moved to Texas in 2024 to work as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M, according to the AP and reporting tied to the packet source. She built an 8-0-1 record before losing by unanimous decision to Tiara Brown in a WBC women’s featherweight title fight last month in Orlando.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
