WIENER NEUSTADT, Austria — A man accused of pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group and plotting to attack one of Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts in August 2024 pleaded guilty Tuesday as his trial began, according to reporting from The Associated Press via ClickOnDetroit.
The defendant, identified only as Beran A. under Austrian privacy rules, is a 21-year-old Austrian citizen charged with terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization. He could face up to 20 years in prison and has been in custody since August 2024, his lawyer said.
Defense attorney Anna Mair said her client pleaded guilty to the charges related to the concert plot and deeply regrets his actions. Austrian media also reported that he pleaded guilty to being a member of a terrorist organization.
Authorities said the plot was disrupted before it could be carried out, but the threat still led officials to cancel Swift’s three Vienna concerts in August 2024. The concerts were part of Swift’s Eras Tour and were expected to draw about 65,000 people inside Ernst Happel Stadium each night, with as many as 30,000 more gathered outside. Prosecutors said Beran A. allegedly planned to target people outside the stadium with knives or homemade explosives and hoped to kill as many people as possible.
Prosecutors said Beran A. also networked with other Islamic State members before the planned attack, discussed buying weapons and making bombs, and sought to illegally buy weapons in the days before the show. Authorities searched his apartment on Aug. 7, 2024, and said they found bomb-making materials. The concerts were scheduled to start the following day.
Beran A. is being tried alongside Arda K., who faces terrorism-related charges connected to a separate plan to carry out simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 in the name of the Islamic State group. Prosecutors said Beran A. and Arda K. did not carry out those attacks. A third man in that plot, Hasan E., allegedly stabbed a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca on March 11, 2024, and remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, prosecutors said.
Only Beran A. was charged in connection with the Vienna concert plot. He pleaded not guilty to the charges tied to the alleged plan for simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE. The trial is being held in Wiener Neustadt, about an hour south of Vienna, and proceedings are scheduled to continue May 12.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
