TUCSON, AZ — The FBI released a new suspect description and raised the reward to $100,000 in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie.
On Feb. 10, authorities released surveillance footage showing an armed individual on the front porch of the Guthrie residence. The person in the video wore a ski mask, a zip-up jacket and gloves while carrying a backpack.
The FBI’s Operational Technology Division used forensic analysis of the doorbell camera footage to determine the height of the suspect. As reported by Reuters, the man is estimated to be between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build.
The suspect was also recorded carrying a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack. As per People Magazine, federal agents believe the specific details about the man’s height and equipment will help the public provide better information to the 24-hour command post.
The FBI’s Phoenix office announced on Feb.12 it has doubled the reward for leads from $50,000 to $100,000. The increase is meant to encourage tips that could help locate the missing 84‑year‑old or lead to the arrest of those connected to her Feb. 1 disappearance.
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her Tucson home during the early morning hours of Feb. 1. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a Feb. 3 press conference that investigators believe she was taken against her will.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings posted a video to social media on Feb. 7 stating they would pay for their mother’s safe return. The family has remained in Arizona as the investigation enters its second week.
The FBI has received 13,000 tips since the search began, as reported by People Magazine. Every tip is reviewed for credibility by Threat Intake Examiners at the National Threat Operations Center (NTOC) and investigators assigned to the case.
Several media outlets received alleged ransom notes linked to the disappearance shortly after the investigation started. Law enforcement officials are also testing a black glove found near the Guthrie home for DNA evidence.
Savannah Guthrie, 54, shared images of the suspect on Instagram and appealed for public help in identifying him. She said the family believes her mother is still alive and urged anyone with information to contact authorities.
“Someone out there recognizes him. We believe she is still out there. Bring her home,” Guthrie said, speaking about her abducted mother.
The FBI is asking anyone with information to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
