DAYTON, MN — A Becker man is facing a criminal vehicular homicide charge after investigators say he was using TikTok and other apps on his phone before a 2024 crash on Interstate 94 that killed a 60-year-old woman.

According to charging details reported by KARE11 and additional complaint details published by FOX 9, Jordan Thomas Land, 32, is accused of rear-ending Julie Kay Terwey’s disabled Ford Escape on Oct. 27, 2024, after her vehicle had stopped in the center lane following a deer strike.

Investigators allege Land was driving his Mazda CX-5 between 70 and 85 mph as a cell phone extraction showed repeated use of TikTok, Safari and Facebook in the minutes before impact. The report says his phone logged nearly constant activity between 5:05 a.m. and 5:15 a.m., and that TikTok remained active until 5:31:41 a.m., seconds after the crash.

Police also said Land’s phone connected to the Mazda’s Bluetooth system at 5:04 a.m. and that a Google search for "how can you stop balding" was made at 5:05:47 a.m. Traffic camera video captured the collision at about 5:31 a.m., according to the complaint.

When investigators confronted him with the phone data, Land reportedly told police he could have been using the apps around that time because it was near the election. He has been charged by summons and is due to make his first court appearance in August.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
