SAN BERNARDINO, CA — One person was killed and a police officer was injured overnight after officers responded to an apartment complex on North California Street and got into an altercation with someone authorities called a suspect.

KTLA reported that officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of North California Street, near the 210 Freeway, just after 11:40 p.m. Friday. The station said the reason officers were originally called out was not immediately verified.

Video from the scene showed a large law enforcement presence inside the New Zion Manor apartment complex, with investigators moving in and out of one unit.

A woman who spoke with KTLA off camera said she heard gunshots late Friday night and saw someone loaded into an ambulance. Additional footage showed police activity at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, which a police official said was possibly connected.

Authorities later said the suspect died at the scene and that the injured officer was taken to Arrowhead. Officials said the officer’s injuries were expected to be survivable.

The San Bernardino County Medical Examiner arrived around 8 a.m. Saturday to remove the body. The dead person’s identity was not released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
