LOS ANGELES, CA — A woman charged with attempting to murder Rihanna has been found mentally competent to stand trial, allowing the prosecution over gunfire at the singer’s home to resume after months of psychiatric evaluations.
Los Angeles County Judge Maria Cavalluzzi reinstated criminal proceedings against Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, of Orlando, Florida, on September 29, according to Associated Press reporting published by News4JAX. Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and 13 other felony counts stemming from the March 8 shooting. No one was injured.
Police and prosecutors allege Ortiz drove a Tesla to the Beverly Hills-area property shared by Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, extended an AR-15-style rifle from a window and fired at least 20 rounds toward their property and a neighboring home.
Investigators found bullet holes in an Airstream trailer where the couple had been and in the exterior wall of a second-floor nursery. Their three young children were in that room with their nanny when the shooting occurred, according to the report.
Along with attempted murder, Ortiz faces 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, representing each of the people on the two properties, and three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle or dwelling. She could face life in prison if convicted on all charges.
The competency ruling followed a suspension of the criminal proceedings shortly after the case began. The psychiatric findings were not discussed in open court, and documents containing those details are sealed.
Ortiz attended the brief September 29 hearing in yellow jail clothing and handcuffs, seated behind glass in the courtroom’s custody area. She did not speak. Cavalluzzi ordered her to appear again on September 30; the report did not include an outcome for that subsequent hearing.
Investigators said Ortiz denied attempting murder after her arrest later on the day of the shooting. Authorities said she had no prior police record, while public records showed she had held a speech-pathology license for more than a decade.
Attorneys for both sides declined to comment after the competency hearing. Defense lawyers have not publicly discussed Ortiz beyond her plea and procedural matters, and authorities have not disclosed a motive or described any connection between her and Rihanna.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
