, PA (PPP)— A 29-year-old Pittsburgh man has been charged with felony retail theft and misdemeanor defiant trespassing after being caught stealing from a Target store.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 16, 2023, when an officer was dispatched to the store for a defiant trespass in progress. Upon arriving, the officer found Rashon Coleman being detained by another officer after being caught stealing.

According to the criminal complaint, the executive manager of Target’s asset forfeiture department provided paperwork showing that Coleman had been given multiple orders to not return to Target by authorized employees and police officers. Despite these warnings, Coleman was observed on store surveillance cameras on March 16, 2023, stealing beige pants worth $34.00 and brown flip flop sandals worth $20.00. The stolen items were recovered from Coleman when he was detained.

The complaint states that Coleman had been caught stealing from the same Target store on March 2, 2023, where he was observed on camera taking clothing off his body and replacing them with clothing from off the racks. The stolen items from that incident included Crest toothpaste, a 10-pack of black shirts, and a black Levi’s XXL Lava Stone coat, among other items, bringing the total value of stolen items to $268.02.

Coleman has previously pleaded guilty to four separate incidents of retail theft, according to the complaint. Due to his prior guilty pleas, the current incident has been graded as a felony three.

Affidavit of Probable Cause
On 03/16/2023 at 1532 hrs I, Officer Brendan Orris #4814, was dispatched to Target at ██████████████ for a defiant trespass in progress.

My backup, Officer Edward Hawthorne, arrived on scene first and detained the actor, Rashon Coleman. I arrived on scene shortly after and spoke to Alden Lee who is the executive manager of Target’s asset forfeiture department.

Lee showed me paperwork showing the days Coleman had been given his trespass warning by authorized Target employees and/or Pittsburgh Police Officers. On 03/02/2023 Coleman was given an order to not return to Target by Pittsburgh Police Officer Craig Claflin. On 03/12/2023 Coleman was once again given the order not to be on Target property, this incident was associated with CCR# 23-38809. Coleman Signed both papers stating he understood he was to not be on the property.

Lee observed Coleman come inside Target today 03/16/2023. Lee states he knows Coleman is not to be on Target property therefore he followed him through the store by cameras and in person. Lee saw Coleman drop the clothes he was wearing and put on clothes from the store after removing the price tags. Coleman had on the clothing when he was detained which were beige pants worth $34.00 and brown flip flop sandals worth $20.00.

Lee also showed me video footage of an incident on 03/02/2023 that dearly shows Coleman inside Target taking clothing off his body and replacing them with clothing from off the racks. Prior to putting on the clothing Coleman removes the tags. Lee was able to provide me with a list of all items taken by Coleman on 03/02/2023. Coleman’s actions were all observed and recorded by store surveillance cameras. Items were Crest toothpaste $4.19, Boxer Brief Large Black/Grey $23.49, Cetaphll cleanser $3.39, 10 pack of black shirts $ 12.99, black Topher slippers $21.99, Denizen belt $19.99, Goodfellow black shirt $ 15.00, black Jeans 40×30 $32.99, and a black Levis XXL Lava Stone coat $79.99.

This brings the total of all items taken from Target to be $268.02.

I ran a NCIC criminal history check for Coleman through JNET. Coleman has pled guilty to 4 separate incidents where he was charged with retail theft. These are listed as date and OTN: 11/11/2012 OTN: G578380-5, 08/28/2014 OTN: G688451-1, 01/27/2021 OTN: G 881556.4, and 01/20/2021 OTN: G881893-5. Due to the above guilty pleas regarding 4 separate retail thefts, this incident will result in a felony three grading.

Lee stated all documents and video evidence will be preserved for court. Lee will be available to attend for any court appearances.

Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
