Affidavit of Probable Cause
On March 25, 2023, at approximately 11:39 hours 1, Officer Kelly was dispatched to Sally Beauty Supply at ████████████ for a report of a retail theft that just occurred.
County dispatch updated me with information that the suspected actor left Sally Beauty Supply in a “z-trip” with the numbers “212” on the back. County dispatch also updated that the description of the actor was a black female wearing a black beanie and yellow Nikes.
Upon arrival at Brentwood Towne Square, I observed a gray “Z-Trip” Dodge minivan with the letters “212” on the back. I followed the “Z-trip” van that matched the description from the caller/witnesses and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Brownsville Road and Grad Street.
When the vehicle pulled over, I noticed what appeared to be a backseat passenger lift a shopping bag off of the rear seat. Upon approach, I noticed a female in the backseat who matched the description. Sgt. Delallo arrived as backup, and I detained the female, later identified as Melissa Edmonds.
I looked in the backseat of the “z-trip” and observed a green shopping bag with various types of electric clippers inside.
I asked the driver of the “z-trip”, who was not involved, if the green shopping bag was in the vehicle before she picked up Edmonds, and she stated that it was not.
Officer Swick performed a witness identification drive by, which resulted in a positive identification of Melissa Edmonds as the actor.
I contacted a Sally Beauty Supply employee who said that she saw a black female with a black beanie, and yellow Nikes putting stuff into a green bag. I asked the employee if the items Officers recovered were confirmed stolen/missing from the store inventory, and she said yes. I asked the store employee if they were 4 various types of electronic clippers, and she said yes.
Edmonds completed a statement form at the Brentwood Police Station, which stated that she went to Sally Beauty to “obtain” merchandise to help sell for her mother’s pancreatic cancer.
