GRANT PARISH, LA — Police have apprehended two men who were attempting to smuggle in $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine into a Federal Prison by using a cannon.
According to police, 18-year-old Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz and 19-year-old Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, both of Greely, Colorado, were arrested for Attempting to Introduce Contraband into a Penal Institution and Attempting to Distribute Methamphetamine.
The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office said the suspects’ plan was to use the cannon, which is propelled by compressed air, to launch the items over a security fence onto the grounds of Penitentiary Pollock in Grant Parish, Louisiana.
Police said the cannon has a range of shooting items over 350 feet.
“[The cannon] was not something that was homemade,” Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain told Louisiana Radio Network. “It was bought, and it was professionally manufactured, and it’s very powerful.”
McCain also said a “very observant deputy” stopped the two suspects before they were able to get any drugs into the prison.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced they currently have a detainer on Munoz because he is in the country illegally.
Presumption of Innocence: A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is presumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The defendant in this case is only accused of the charges set forth in the criminal complaint. They are innocent until proven guilty.
